Spa and massage therapists are the last remaining professions in the UK that don’t have a licensing scheme.
And they’re not going anywhere.
In fact, Spa and Bodyworks (SB&B) – which is based in the Scottish town of Stirling – is preparing to become the UK’s first professional bodyware company to introduce its own licensing scheme for massage therapists.
The company has partnered with the UK-based firm Lava to create a comprehensive licensing system for all of its licensed massage therapists across the UK, including in Wales, the Midlands and the North West.
SB&B has been working closely with Lava on the licensing process since January.
“Our licensing is going to be a global approach,” said Lava’s head of licensing, Chris O’Connor.
“We’ve got a team in the United States, which is going through the process.
And in the past, the UK has been the most restrictive, and it’s been a challenge.”‘
You can’t afford to be ignorant’ SB&W, which has been offering massage therapy in Scotland since 1998, has more than 1,000 therapists in the country.
The UK has only about 300.
O’Connors claims that because of the licensing system, the industry can offer therapists an excellent alternative to conventional massage therapy.
“We’ve found that because there’s no licensing system in place, we can actually provide a very affordable and accessible alternative for people who are looking to get into massage therapy, or who have other types of therapy that they’re looking to undertake,” he said.
“You can certainly find out what your options are for treatment and get in touch with the person who has the best experience for you, and then you can make that decision.”
There’s a lot of misconceptions out there, and a lot people who have a particular experience that’s not right for them, can get a massage therapist and get a very good result out of that.
“O’Leary agrees that the licensing approach is an excellent way to allow therapists to make informed decisions.”

If they’re interested in a massage, they can contact the company online or over the phone.
But O’Cain and his team have also set up a Facebook group where people can post their concerns and concerns, including about the licensing, or about the cost of a massage.
“A lot people don’t realise the amount of work it’s taking to get your first appointment,” he explained.
“They don’t know how many hours it takes to get to the appointment, and they don’t even know what the cost will be.
So that’s why it’s really important that we talk to as many people as possible about this.”

In addition to the free consultation, Lava will also provide a $200 reward for the first person who can get the most out of their massage.
“It’s really an opportunity for people to make sure that they are giving back to the profession,” said O’Reilly.
“If someone has gone through the same experience and they feel they are really passionate about their job, they may want to get involved with the organisation and really get involved in their community.”

It sees an increase of 10 to 15% in people from the UK every month.
